How to Become A Real Estate Agent in New York

Becoming a real estate agent is a rewarding opportunity that allows you to run your own small business. Real estate agents make their own schedules, can work from home, and are in control of their annual income. For many people this is the ideal opportunity. Agents also will meet new people and see beautiful houses on a daily basis.

To get your real estate license in New York you must be:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Free of criminal convictions

1) Begin by choosing a real estate school and complete your 75 hours of qualifying courses:

Aspiring real estate agents have the choice of completing the required education in-person or via online courses. There are benefits to both.

  • In-person real estate school:
    • Can be completed in 10 days
    • Will spend all day in the classroom
    • Can interact with other students and instructors
    • *Contact the school directly to determine how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected live classes
  • Online real estate schools
    • Allow you to complete the coursework virtually and at your own pace
    • Are typically less expensive than in person schools
    • Offer resources to jumpstart your real estate career as well as obtaining your license

2) After completing your coursework, it is time to schedule your exam:

  • Create an eAccess NY account
  • Schedule your exam at one of the 11 testing sites in New York State
    • The cost is only $15
  • Study for your exam and pass your exam
    • There are many practice exams and resources available to help you prepare

3) Find a broker to hang your license and apply for your license:

After passing your examination, new real estate agents are required to find a broker to sponsor them to apply for their license. Once finding a licensed broker that is the right fit, agents can apply for their real estate license through their eAccessNY account.
